Areola Tattooing Frequently Asked Questions - Tysons, VA
Who is areola/nipple micropigmentation for?
Areola and nipple micropigmentation is a specialty area of medical tattooing. It now also serves as a cosmetic treatment to darken, enlarge and define the nipples and the surrounding areola, so they appear more prominent, symmetrical and ‘sexy’.
Areola Micropigmentation may also be called Areola Tattooing, Nipple Tattoo, Areola Pigmentation, Areola Restoration, Areola Recoloring, or Areola Simulation. This is a service for women and men who are breast cancer survivors, have had reconstructive surgery, or have fading areolas and/or irregular areolas/nipples.
After a woman undergoes a mastectomy, the new breast is essentially a 'blank canvas.’ While this operation can recreate the size and shape of the patient's natural breast, the darker sensitive skin of the nipple and areola is usually completely removed. Thankfully, Lizeth specializes in areola and nipple tattooing, which involves creating extraordinary lifelike tattoos that give the illusion of a real areola and nipple. This tattoo completes the real breast and is done at the final stage of breast reconstruction.
Now woman can have breasts that appear normal and have the most realistic-looking nipples possible. Our 3-dimensional areola nipple tattooing looks so real, you have to touch it to believe it.
How Long After My Breast Reconstructive Surgery Can I Get My Areola and Nipple Tattoo?
It is safe to receive this treatment after three to five months following your surgery. Scar Camouflage 12-18 months. ~We request medical clearance on all cases.
Is a Consultation Required?
Yes! An in person consultation is required to assess and confirm that the skin is healed. In addition, we will discuss your medical history.
Once you are ready for your procedure, Lizeth will spend the first hour designing your areola nipple shape and deciding on the size and placement aligning them perfectly on the reconstructed breasts to look as natural as possible. She will also create the perfect color match. With the variety of colors in house, Lizeth will custom blend the perfect match for you to create a nipple with subtle brown shading and a three-dimensional effect to match the natural nipple, creating the illusion of an areola.
How Long Will the Procedure Take?
The consultation and procedure together can take between two to three hours.
Is it Painful?
Following breast reconstruction, there may be a loss of sensation in the areola complex. Women have reported anywhere from light pressure, light vibration, to sharp light pain in some areas.
We place topical anesthetics to numb the area nicely.
